We believe in giving credit where credit is due. Our policy:
Because we engage exclusively in commentary, criticism, teaching, and news reporting (even though we are a commercial enterprise), we use text, images, audio, or video by others in accordance with 17 U.S. Code § 107 – Limitations on Exclusive Rights: Fair Use. We add clear commentary, educational analysis, or transformation to the content used.

We put short quotes in quotation marks and informally reference the person/source. For longer quotes (more than a few sentences) we either indent the text or add quotation marks, often both, and attribute it to a person and/or source. We link to the source only when we deem it appropriate.
For de minimis quotes, we generally only name the person to whom it is commonly attributed.
Graphics
We do not normally provide attribution for visual media that is in the Public Domain (PD), from sources where attribution is not required, or that is AI-generated in most cases. We sometimes make exceptions, however.
We use short clips or screen grabs in commentary, criticism, teaching, and news reporting with clear transformation. This transformation includes, but is not limited to, cropping, coloring, applying digital filter effects, adding annotations, or presenting within an infographic or collage.
Starting in 2026, some illustrative slides were created from my writing by NotebookLM.
Special note about Wikipedia/Creative Commons (CC).
We abhor Wikipedia/Creative Commons images and their other content because it is a labyrinth of confusion on many levels. However, when we are compelled to use them, it is CC0 (Public Domain), and CC-BY only. We specifically repudiate the use of CC-ND, CC-NC, and all CC-SA (ShareAlike) versions of licenses due to their misuse or abuse by the licensors who post content on CC.
In cases where Fair Use may not apply to the use of CC content, we credit using their minimal Author, Source, and License format, and do not include the title since it is often not present or used in unreasonable ways by the licensor. Most people find the ever-changing CC licenses an abysmal mess. We no longer link to the individual licenses shown in the attribution. We comply with the spirit and letter of CC attribution by linking to all licenses so the viewer can access the one referenced. In fulfilment of the CC version attribution requirement, use this link to all licenses to see their descriptions and distinctions. PD indicates Public Domain (aka CC0).
